Following months of anticipation,1729 Maths School has officially opened its doors to its founding cohort of students. The milestone marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in mathematics education, as the school embarks on its mission to nurture exceptional mathematical talent and inspire the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators and critical thinkers.

The opening comes shortly after 1729 Maths School was featured in The Sunday Times, highlighting the school's distinctive educational vision and the excitement surrounding the arrival of its first students.

The first days at 1729 Maths School have been characterised by curiosity, challenge and enthusiasm. Founding students have already immersed themselves in engaging lessons designed to encourage deep thinking and creative problem-solving.

From the outset, students have been invited to move beyond familiar approaches and embrace new ways of tackling mathematical questions. Staff have been particularly impressed by the originality of students' ideas, their willingness to experiment, and the thoughtful perspectives they have brought to classroom discussions."We have been asking students to step well outside their usual ways of thinking and working," explained staff. "They have shown a remarkable readiness to explore new ideas and approach problems through completely different lenses. Their thinking has already been strikingly original and extraordinarily thoughtful,” George Sheppard, Housemaster (St Bees, 1729).

The first week has also been an opportunity for students to build connections and create the foundations of a vibrant new school community. One highlight was the inaugural 1729 Pupil Social, where students received their St Bees House hoodies and took part in a challenging quiz competition, memorably won by a team of Year 7 students.
