Choosing the right Boarding School

At Mill Hill Education Group, we understand the importance of finding a school most suited for your child. Choosing the best boarding school is a decision that will shape your child’s personal growth and educational journey. You need to find a school that not only has academic excellence, but also a supportive environment and a well-rounded approach to development.

We believe there are three important considerations when selecting a boarding school and, to support you and your family, we want to share with you.

1) Knowing your child’s needs and interests

Academics

At Mill Hill Education Group, we pride ourselves on offering a variety of academic programmes suitable for different learning styles. Whether your child thrives in stimulating academic settings or benefits from additional support, our curriculum and dedicated teaching staff ensure every student reaches their full potential.

Co-curricular

Beyond academics, we encourage students to explore their passions through a rich range of extracurricular activities. From sports and arts to community service and leadership programmes, Mill Hill Education Group provides ample opportunities for students to excel outside the classroom.

Community

Our close-knit community fosters a sense of belonging and supports each student’s personal and social development. Whether through House systems, mentorship programmes, or pastoral care, we ensure that every child feels valued and supported throughout their journey with us.

Central to our ethos is the wellbeing of our students. Our experienced pastoral team ensures that each child receives the emotional and social support they need to thrive in a boarding school environment.

2) Completing in depth research about potential schools

Academic Reputation and Future Endeavours

Mill Hill Education Group is known for its strong academic reputation with fantastic exam results and successful university placements. Our commitment to academic excellence is evident in our rigorous curriculum and innovative teaching methods.

Evaluating the success stories of alumni is also vital when choosing a boarding school. It offers a lens into the effectiveness of the school's education and support systems. Alumni achievements demonstrate the quality of academic programs and the strength of professional networks, which can provide significant advantages to your child. These outcomes not only reflect the school's ability to prepare students for diverse paths but also showcase the potential for personal and professional growth, ensuring that the school aligns with your child’s aspirations and values.

Facilities and location

Visiting our campus locations allows you to experience our modern facilities first hand. From well-equipped classrooms to modern labs and large sports facilities, we provide the resources necessary for a comprehensive educational experience.

The school’s location will determine the environment. Think about whether your child will be comfortable in that setting, whether it’s a bustling city, a quiet countryside, or somewhere in between.

The boarding location for Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International is suited for those who are drawn to day trips in the city but would like a quiet place to go back to. After a trip to London, pupils return to the large campus of 150 acres and relax in an environment that is bursting with nature.

There are four boarding houses for Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International, Burton Bank, Collinson, Macgregor House and Ridgeway. Find the location of the three boarding schools here. The Macgregor House has its own grounds and is located off The Ridgeway Road.

Cobham Hall is also suited for nature enthusiasts with its boarding community sitting at the heart of the school, which is an English country house located on the edge of the Kent Downs, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There are three boarding houses at Cobham Hall. Bligh House is for pupils from Year to 11. Brook House is home to the Sixth Form Girls and the Stuart House is a separate boarding house for boys in Sixth Form.

Costs and Financial aid

Boarding school tuition fees can vary significantly. Ensure you understand the full cost, including tuition, boarding, and additional expenses such as uniforms, trips, and extracurricular activities.

Our clear fee structure includes comprehensive tuition and boarding fees, ensuring families can plan their finances accordingly.

Many boarding schools offer financial aid and scholarships to help offset costs. Research the options available and determine if your family qualifies for any assistance.

At Mill Hill School we provide bursaries and scholarship programmes to support deserving students. Cobham hall also provides scholarships and bursaries. We are committed to making our education accessible to talented individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Open Days and Tours

Attend open days and tours to get a feel for the school environment and culture before you make such a big decision. This is also an opportunity to meet teachers, staff, and current students, and to ask any questions you may have. We offer multiple open days throughout the year. View the calendar here.

Communicate with staff

Create and maintain good communication with the admissions team and other staff members. Their responsiveness and willingness to answer your questions can be a good indicator of the school’s overall communication style.

Parental Involvement

It’s important to understand the level of parental involvement the school expects or encourages. Some schools have active parent associations and regular communication with parents, while others foster a more independent environment for students.

At Mill Hill Education Group, we encourage parental involvement and provide regular updates on student progress and school activities, building a strong partnership between home and school.

3) Trusting your instincts

Listen to your child

Involve your child in the decision-making process as much as possible. Their comfort and enthusiasm about the school are essential indicators of a good fit.

Follow your gut

After all the research and visits, trust your instincts. If a school feels right and meets your criteria, it’s likely a good choice for your family.
