How to Support Your Child’s Transition to Boarding School

Sending your child to boarding school is a daunting and sometimes emotional transition. It’s a new chapter in their education, but with the right support, it can be a rewarding experience for personal growth and development. Here are some key ways you can support your child in adjusting to life at boarding school.

We have multiple open days throughout the year, view our list of schools and find the one most suitable for your child or book a private tour to get started.

The schools within our group which offer boarding options include Mill Hill School, providing boarding for ages 13-18 and Cobham Hall, offering flexible boarding arrangements for pupils aged 11-19. Along with Heathfield an all-girls day and boarding school for ages 11-18, situated in Ascot, Berkshire.

Mill Hill International also offers boarding options for pupils aged 13-18 with a new Sixth Form launching in September 2025.

Here’s everything you need to know before making a decision which will affect you and your child's future.

Prepare Your Child Beforehand

Start The Conversation Early

Begin discussing boarding with your child in plenty of time so they adjust to the idea. This will give them time to set realistic expectations and understand both the exciting opportunities and potential challenges they may face. It’ll also allow them to share their concerns, so you’re able to address any fears early on.

Visit The School

Before the term begins, take the opportunity to visit the school with your child. Familiarising them with their new environment can ease anxiety and make it feel less intimidating when they arrive at the beginning of term.

Pack with Care

Packing for boarding school is more than just clothes and school supplies, it’s about bringing a piece of home with them. To ensure they have everything they need, write a checklist and pack it together. Encourage them to bring personal items such as family photos or a favourite book to create a sense of familiarity in their new surroundings.

Encourage Independence

One of the key benefits of boarding school is the opportunity for children to develop independence and self-confidence. While it’s tempting to step in and do everything for them, encourage your child to take responsibility for tasks such as packing their own bag and managing their time. Helping them build these skills before they leave will make their transition smoother and boost their confidence in handling tasks on their own.

Support Social

Making new friends is an important part of the boarding school experience. Encourage your child to embrace social opportunities by joining clubs, sports teams, or co-curricular. Reassure them that it’s normal to feel nervous at first, but friendships will develop over time. If possible, help them connect with other new pupils before term starts so they have familiar faces when they arrive.

Stay in touch

Regular communication is key, but it’s important to strike the right balance. While your child will want to hear from you, too many phone calls or messages can make it harder for them to immerse themselves in school life fully. Set up a routine for calls or messages that work for both of you.

Encourage Emotional Resilience

Homesickness is a natural part of settling into boarding school, but your child will gradually find their feet. Encourage them to focus on the positives, whether it’s new friendships, favourite subjects, or activities they enjoy. Our boarding houses provide strong pastoral support, with dedicated staff who are always on hand to listen and offer guidance. Pupils will quickly get to know housemasters, housemistresses, and other members of staff they can turn to for reassurance, helping them feel supported as they adjust to their new environment. Let them know that feeling homesick is normal and that they can always talk to you or a trusted member of staff if they need support.

Support Through Challenges

Every transition comes with its unique opportunities and challenges. Your child may face academic stress, social issues, or emotional challenges as they settle in, but this is also a time full of possibilities for growth and learning. Be a supportive listener, offering reassurance and advice when needed. Encourage them to embrace these new experiences, and remind them that teachers and school staff are there to support them every step of the way.

Transitioning to boarding school is a big step, but with the right preparation and support, your child will flourish. By encouraging open communication and independence you can help them embrace this exciting new chapter with confidence. Here at Mill Hill Education Group, we are dedicated to providing a welcoming and supportive environment where every student can thrive.
