Next in our Meet the Head series, is Head of St Joseph's In The Park, Mr Doug Brown!
I was inspired to become a headteacher to help develop children, shaping their futures through education. I am passionate about creating an environment where learning thrives and education continuously evolves. The most fulfilling part is seeing children grow, both academically and personally, as they reach their full potential.
My first year of teaching was in a very large state school in North London, where I loved working with the children. I quickly realised that, while enthusiasm is important, change takes time. The biggest lesson I learned was to be patient with myself - you can’t change everything at once.
We ensure the School’s values and vision are reflected daily through our three guiding principles: Be Kind, Be Adventurous, Be Yourself.
Kindness is embedded in our culture, fostering empathy and inclusivity. We inspire curiosity and resilience by encouraging students to embrace challenges and new experiences. Most importantly, we celebrate individuality, creating an environment where every child feels valued and confident to be themselves.
As a leader, I have learned that education is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Every child has unique skills and abilities. Valuing each individual means recognising their strengths and providing opportunities for them to thrive. A truly effective education nurtures potential, adapts to diverse needs, and inspires lifelong learning. By embracing this approach, we create an environment where every child feels valued and empowered to succeed.
Our key priorities for the coming years focus on developing the growth of our pupils, strengthening links with the Mill Hill Education Group, and raising our profile. We will enhance academic and personal development through a well-rounded curriculum that nurtures every child’s potential. Deepening our collaboration with Mill Hill will provide greater opportunities for pupils, staff, and families, ensuring a seamless educational journey. Additionally, we will actively promote our School’s excellence, engaging with more families to showcase the outstanding education and community we offer.
My favourite subjects in school were Sports and History - one fuelled my love for teamwork and competition, while the other sparked my curiosity about the past. Both shaped my passion for learning, leadership, and perseverance.
After a busy school day, I enjoy watching my daughters play football for their teams, sharing in their passion for the game. As a lifelong Spurs fan and season ticket holder, I love supporting my team through the highs and lows. Travelling is another passion of mine, as I enjoy exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. I also have a deep love for skiing, which combines adventure, challenge, and the thrill of the mountains.
