Our next Head in our Meet the Head series is Ms Sarah Bellotti.
As we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Mill Hill International's opening, Ms Bellotti shares her insights, challenges, and the moments that shaped her journey in education.
My inspiration to take up teaching was having an amazing Primary school teacher when I was 10 years old. Becoming a Headteacher was the result of a golden opportunity to found Mill Hill International 10 years ago. I love being the Head of Mill Hill International - the pupils always teach me something new, and the huge diversity of staff and pupils makes this school a fabulous place. That, and the wonderful environment – surrounded by secular trees and enchanting birdsong.
My first year of teaching was in a language school in Bordeaux, France where I taught adults and children. The biggest lesson I learnt was that if I had fun in the lessons, so did the students.
I find that the values of our School are already shared by all teachers and most pupils. How I make sure that these are reflected in school is through relented bothered-ness; always having time for pupils who get it wrong, and singing the praises of those who get it right.
I have learnt that we all need to continue to develop and that learning never stops. Fascinated by the latest research in education, I am currently interested in two main areas: how AI will enhance teaching and learning, and how the teenage brain is distracted.
Our key priorities will be published next term in our School Development Plan 2025-28. Watch this space!
French. I loved how learning languages opened windows onto new vistas and cultures. I still remember the first song I learnt in French when I was eight years old: ‘Rosalie est partie.’ My French teacher must have been fond of French songs from the 1930s!
Since my day ends quite late, my main activity is eating dinner cooked by my wonderful Italian chef and husband! At the weekends, I love to be active – either walking, cycling or going to an art exhibition. I also love preparing meals for friends and family.
